Abbott Laboratories, a healthcare company, has confirmed that it is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, almost a year after shutting down a Michigan baby-formula plant following reported illnesses.
The company did not specify what aspect of the company is under investigation. Abbott stated in a statement , “DOJ has informed us of its investigation and we’re cooperating fully.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Justice Department is investigating conduct at Abbott’s plant in Sturgis, Michigan, citing people familiar with the matter who it did not name.
The nature of the investigation has not been independently confirmed.
Abbott had voluntarily shut down production at its Sturgis infant formula manufacturing plant on February 17th, 2022, after infants who consumed formula from the plant became ill. This shutdown led to a nationwide shortage of infant formula.
